In His Own Words
"They are very good at finding a wedge issue and using it to get people to listen. White supremacists play on people's darkest fears, and they know what buttons to push. In the east, it's Jews and blacks; in Seattle, it's the gay/lesbian issue; in California, it's the immigrant issue."
"...white supremacists in the 1990s are adept at changing the package of bigotry to become a palatable message to many. Calmer talk of freedom, family values and God has replaced their heavy race rhetoric."
"It's easy to ignore these groups, believing that they'll go away or that organized white supremacists only exist in the south. These are dangerous myths. Where there was no opposition, we returned again and again. That's what's happening in Pennsylvania."
"Organized white supremacy groups are counting on you to do nothing,"
"If my racism or hatred has affected you directly or indirectly, I apologize and take responsibility."
"Most racists come from dysfunctional families where the need to belong is not met. Instinctively, the young person looks outside the family for fulfillment of that need. The organized racists are there to fulfill it."
"The basic needs of young people are being addressed by the purveyors of hate, unity, identity and family. Education & Vigilance is but one of the keys to combating the growth of hate and bigotry. Teaching young people to explore that which is different rather than fear the unknown is instrumental in the evolution of a healthy society. You, as educator, play an integral part in helping to ensure that the children of today do not become the leaders of tomorrow's hate."
